Fresh Zone contest: Zubrycka Justyna, Martins Tiago


Zubrycka Justyna

A student at the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Justyna Zubrycka makes intermedia works as a member of the Dotka group. This year, she has worked on her Master's diploma A device for haptic perception of music under supervision of prof. Piotr Bożyk.

Martins Tiago

A PhD student of the Interface Culture Group at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz, Austria, where he also teaches Physical computing and game design.

Impersonation
was a narrative city game whose plot was encoded in the physical space of the Krakow’s Kazimierz district. The participant listened to the threads of history remembered by the City walls with the use of the immersion medium of a mnemoscope that fitted the semantic layer of the game.

The participants followed in the footsteps of a young girl called Urszula. The game led them to discover the strange disappearance of Urszula and its circumstances, ultimately to reveal the links between their characters and the main character.
The game involved exploring the real space, created by the streets and buildings of Krakow’s Kazimierz. The players had to look for particular locations, which let their memories be heard through a special device – the Mnemoscope.

Equipment
The participants were equipped with a map of Kazimierz and a special device, the Mnemoscope.
The Mnemoscope is a medium reproducing recordings of the events related to Ursula’s story. In this way, a phonic matter is created, recorded by places. Places of interest were marked on the map. Each of them had a special marker, which needed to be scanned by the player, using the Mnemoscope. After they have found the marker, players touched the Mnemoscope membrane to its surface and listened to the memories of the place using the device’s headphones.

Rules of the Game

To start the game, the participants went to Urszula’s house, found a special marker located nearby and using the Mnemoscope, they listened to the memories of the place. On the basis of the actions of the characters, the player decideed where to go next. The game proceeded as follows: the player went to a chosen location, where he or she found more memories to listen to and advanced the investigation. Then, on the basis of the events, they choosen the next place to go to. The memories of the places evolved with the plot. If, at a particular point, a given place did not have significant memories, the player heard substitute ones. In addition, some places had not been marked on the map. The players needed to find those spots on the basis of descriptions supplied by the characters. The game was divided into two parts. A participant may have wished to start the game with the second act.

Opinions of the Jury members:


Impersonation is a kind of detective story (almost) made real; it is a game that involves the search for solution to a mystery. The detective case is explained during a travel across the City ‘steered’ by the specially designed device. (…) Impersonation is a kind of guide to the City that places fictitious plot in the map of the actual streets, buildings and yards of the Kazimierz district. (Michał Bieniek)

The participant can freely give vent to their imagination and, at the same time, they are players who influence the course of action. Two levels of reality and fiction turn the simple activity of walking into intriguing adventure. (Agnieszka Obszańska)
