London Barbara

Curator of new media and creator of the video collection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Barbara London followed the development of media art from its humble beginnings in the 1960s and 70s. She diligently traces the development of artistic practices, discovering artists and new fields of artwork, and examines the effect of interdisciplinary co-operation and analyses breakthrough moments in the development of new art media. She has organised over 120 exhibitions including solo shows and presenting such early individualists and experimentalists as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Stein Vasulka, Joan Jonas, Gary Hill, Mako Idemitsu, Vaile Export, and Laurie Anderson.

Lecture: The Cutting Edge Is Still Sharp
This lecture was be dedicated to the history of video art examined through the approaches and usage by new technology artists. It was an attempt to take a look at the history of the medium from the viewpoint of changing technical possibilities. In regard to the tremendous importance of new media in today’s art world, this meeting was an opportunity to look at contemporary culture in archaeological terms, which in large measure makes use of the achievements of new media.

The problem of presentation was broached using the examples of the creative works of pioneers and experimental artists, such as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Steinz Vasulka, Joan Jonas, Gary Hill, Mako Idemitsu, Valie Export and Laurie Anderson. This was also a marvellous opportunity to get to know the work of the abovementioned artists and its role in the still-evolving history of the youngest of art forms.
