WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE

NeSpoon

The artist wishes to remain anonymous. The main area of her interest is public space, where she inserts her site-specific works. She creates the so-called 'urban jewellery', laborious and delicate pieces of lace-like pottery, moulded in clay, enamelled and fired. She also creates installations using genuine lace, and is involved in various other projects in the public space. Her works have a discreet, unobtrusive way of embellishing buildings, trees and pavements. The “lace” can be seen in the gardens of Warsaw’s Królikarnia Palace, on the façade of the seat of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers or at the plinth of the Mermaid statue in Warsaw.

NeSpoon was awarded in the In situ category of this year's Artaq, an urban art competition held in France. She lives and works in Warsaw.

The Scrabble project reflected the information mosaic we used to create our image of reality. It was meant to encourage viewers to reflect on their knowledge about the world, usually constructed on the basis of unified information supplied by large media concerns through mainstream media. It was also an invitation to independent explorations and verification of information on the most important aspects of our reality, such as GMOs, global health policies, the nature and causes of financial crises, corporate social responsibility, global warming, conspiracy theories, etc. The project was dedicated to eight topical documentaries available on YouTube.

The project involved the creation of 8 installations, in the form of oversize versions of a scrabble board. Around 400 letters were hand-made by the artist, employing the traditional ceramic process. It was envisaged that the installations fitted into a space with the dimensions of 2m x 2m. The installations were mounted (glued) onto walls at selected points throughout the city. Each installation was dedicated to a different documentary and the criss-crossing words were a reference to their content.

In this form, the installations was also a peculiar kind of graffiti.

The language of the project to be used in the installations was English. Although the project was executed locally, its addressee was global. For the needs of the festival audience, project descriptions and explanations were also provided in Polish.

A series of posters illustrating the films referred to in the installations served as a summary of the project. The posters were designed on the basis of photographs of particular installations, and had a consistent graphic form. They completed the installations, being the only element pointing to a particular film they alluded to.
