Natural Playground

In many places in the City one may find spaces that are spontaneously used by children for playing, such as hillocks, trees and land irregularities. The project’s creators do not meant to convince children that they cannot play in such places, but to remind adults of their extraordinary potential. To this end, Anna Komorowska and Michał Rokita of Pracownia k. (k. Studio) designed special information boards that were placed in several selected Natural Playgrounds.

Opinions of the Jury members:
Maybe sometimes one does not have to produce anything or build anything, but the thing is to find something lying at one’s feet that remains unnoticed. Natural Playground is an exercise in imagination.
(Cecylia Malik)

The design makes one realise that one can change a lot without changing anything. (Aleksandra Wasilewska)

The work involves marking those places in Krakow that, without being specially prepared, ‘naturally’ perform the function of playgrounds. It is in a way to indicate or rather sanction something that, in a way, has sanctioned itself. Natural Playground offers both general reflection on city planning and commentary to the utility of its individual parts. It poses questions about the needs of local communities and the presence of man in the City. (Michał Bieniek)
