Khachatryan Tigran
He was born in 1980 in Yerevan, Armenia, where he also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (from 1998-2004). He is a video and performance artist and is counted among the representatives of the Armenian post-punk culture – his works are nihilistic and, in a way, anti-cultural. He calls his movies “garage videos” he uses the video medium in an unprofessional way and uses a 2 megapixel camera in some of his films. He combines elements of ‘refined’ art with mass culture. Tigran Khachatryan often uses film materials found on the Internet as well as punk music. In one of his movies he used fragments of futuristic poetry, which still influences the reality of the post-communist Armenia, and in another he refers to classic cinema works and well-known directors. In 2008 the artist, together with his friends, created a group using art for political fight.
In 2007 Tigran Khachatryan was in Die, in France on his first artistic residency, currently he is on his second residency in Zurich. He lives and works in Yerevan. |

Films screening

A presentation of works of the Armenian artist, Tigrana Khachtryana during the ArtBoom Festival 2011 included three video films (lasting from a couple to a dozen or so minutes).

Films:
DVD Revolution Like
In his works he used materials found on the Internet. In Armenia, similar to other post-communist countries, the media were controlled and censored. Objective information could have been found on the Internet. When in 2008, during an opposition movement, the government restricted freedom of speech and the use of Internet, social networks, such as Facebook, became even more popular. But Facebook was not used only for posting of pretty pictures, but also for self-organisation in political fight and sharing real information. In 2008 the artist, together with his friends, organised a group which combines art and political fight. In the video, Tigran used sounds of rebellious punk music – interesting on account of its political significance and unconventional use of a social network.
ENTARTETE
The artist used very simple means here – his naked body and simple movements. He used fragments of works of an Armenian poet, a futurist (many poets and writers were the victims of the totalitarian regime). Futuristic poetry still influences post-communist Armenia. What is interesting is the involvement of the artist’s body and references to the 20th-century video-performances.
Stalker
Is one of a series of movies the artist has worked on since 2000. It includes references to the classic cinema works and well-known directors. However, the movie is free from style conventions and limitations. An important aspect of the movie is presentation of brutality hiding under the name of ‘art’. He uses non-professional cinematography and video techniques.
