Mariusz Waras

Originally from Gdynia. Creator of murals, amateur architect, curator of the 238x504 billboard gallery in Gdynia. He graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He is the most famous Polish open-air artist in the world. His original project, M-city, involves creating a number of murals all over the world. As part of this project, the artist has already made several hundred of them: in Gdańsk, Paris, Budapest, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The main theme of his large-format paintings is the urban landscape. As he says, his work constitutes “an artistic play with the form of urban infrastructure”. He uses a limited range of colours, presenting buildings and objects inspired by the architecture of Trójmiasto (Tricity) from an isometric perspective.

mural - m-city 658

The main theme of mural no. 658 is the urban landscape, as usual in M-city’s works. The fantastic infrastructure, characteristic of the artist, have appeared in Krakow’s space for the first time. He presented the cultural capital of Poland as a steamer-city drifting across the waters of a gigantic aquarium. The nature of the underwater city built from uniform modules is utopian. This fantastic creation, attacked by fish resembling live ammunition from all directions, seems like a closed and hostile place which is hard to conquer. Such a vision of the city brings to mind the stereotypical way of perceiving Krakow as a conservative place, a centre of traditional values, a fortress-city.
