Sawicka JadwigaBorn in 1959, Jadwiga Sawicka studied at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in Jerzy Nowosielski’s studio. She lives and works in Przemyśl. On her photography and text installation projects she co-operates with Marek Horwat. Sawicka creates paintings, photographs, and text installations. [In her works] she reaches for everyday items and phenomena – objects made of flowers, plasticine, or meat. Sawicka employs limited colour palette; her paintings frequently feature smooth, pink-and-blue backgrounds. In time, the form has become increasingly synthetic, the artists introduces pictures featuring bare text. Her works deliver a social message; Sawicka is interested in the problem of the language and codes which the contemporary culture makes use of. Since 1997, in Sawicka’s creative output a new manner of imaging has begun to appear: objects and texts in her works feature separately. Pictures, featuring individual pieces of garment set against pastel backgrounds, are created, on which, letter by letter, the artists paints sensational messages – newspaper quotations. Words are removed from their context, often incorrectly divided, devoid of diacritic marks, frequently unexpectedly discontinued: this operation only intensifies anxiety and disorientation. Sawicka treats sensational titles as an aesthetic phenomenon and projects some of them on her paintings or large format prints. Since 1998, she has produced large format prints of black letters on pink background. The characteristic pink colour most frequently is associated with the feminine and thus the theme of the body appears here, however, the artist introduces it very discretely, symbolically. Jadwiga Sawicka has shown her works at a number of individual exhibitions, including: Nawracanie, Oswajanie, Tresowanie [Convertion Domestication Instruction], billboard, Galeria Zewnętrzna AMS, Poznań (1998), Problemy z pamięcią [Accidents of Memory] (with Joan Grossman) - photography, text installation (2002); exhibitions at Galeria Starmach (2006), Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle 2006, Bunkier Sztuki (2003), Zachęta (Warsaw 1999), Galeria Foksal (1998). Quotes![]() Jadwiga Sawicka’s project realised in the public space within the frames of ArtBoom Festival. Its first part consisted of four light-boxes located on one of Krakow’s tenement buildings. Four different quotes was presented against the pale pink background; they created a type of neon, with the twinkling, broken light. ![]() The second part of the project consisted of narrow paper tassels. It was artist’s intervention, subtle in form, into the city space. The texts on the light-boxes and tassels can be read at a close distance. ![]() Project curator: Mirka Bałazy Picture: Weronika Szmuc |
