WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE

Sztwiertnia Grzegorz

Was born in 1968 in Cieszyn. He studied painting at the Academy Of Fine Arts in Krakow, where he presently lectures. He engages in painting, installations, graphics, video, forms, he is also an author of theoretical essays.

Sztwiertnia’s creative work abounds in specific recurrent themes above all else the theme of the body – deformed, disease-ridden, subjected to regimes or medical experiments. Also the motif of an individual isolated from the society is markedly present in his works that is why institutions such as hospitals, prisons, or shelters for homeless people are the artist’s point of focus.

Another motif characteristic for Grzegorz Sztwiertnia’s creative output is the problem of perception, influence of colours, and functioning of the senses. The sign of the artist’s interest in these issues are, for example, the works presented at the Farbenlehre exhibition through its title referring to Goethe’s theory of colours or the Meeting Room 01 exhibition during which the space of the Galeria Kronika [The Chronicle Gallery] was to influence visitors through paintings and changing arrangements.

The artist’s work has been presented both at individual exhibitions as well as collective ones in the most prestigious galleries and museums in Poland and in the world including the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Galeria Zderzak and Galeria Krzysztofory in Krakow, in Lublin, Katowice, Dublin, Prague or Berlin.

The Time Machine

Specifically for the needs of the ArtBoom Festival, Grzegorz Sztwiertnia had prepared the The Time Machine mobile installation, which will change its localisation on each day of the festival. The installation consisted of an object reminding a vertically standing coffin. After entering, the interior arranged as a train toilet is revealed. The aperture features a screen on which a film showing the course of the tracks on the Krakow-Oświęcim [Auschwitz] route will be presented. The visualisation will be accompanied by sound effects.

Sztwiertnia’s work refered to the Holocaust and the "short memory policy”. The artist’s objective is to present a fresh look and to unburden the subject of Shoah and the Jewish issue.
