Bujnowski Rafał


Was born in Wadowice in 1974. He studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Krakow University of Technology (1993-1995) and at the Faculty of Graphics of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts (1995-2000). He was one of the founders of the Słynna Grupa Ładnie which operated between 1995-2001. In 2004, in the frames of the Art in General programme he paid a visit to New York. The same year, he also went on a study visit to Zug, Switzerland. In 2005, he took the international Kunstpreis Europas Zukunft art award.

Bujnowski has presented his works in the frames of nearly thirty individual exhibitions as well as more than sixty collective exhibitions at home and abroad. His major exhibitions in the recent years include: Wrong works 2005-2006 (Daniel Hug Gallery, Los Angeles 2007), The presentation in Galerie Johnen + Schoettle (Koln 2007), Current works in the frames of the W centrum uwagi project (Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw 2006), The presentation in Galerie Ruediger Schoettle (Munich 2006), Embroider (Johnen Galerie, Berlin 2005), Malen (Kunstverein Duesseldorf 2005), Malarstwo (Bunkier Sztuki 2005).

Bujnowski operates in the multimedia area making use of painting, graphics, video, objects, and actions with the view of incessant examination of the social functioning of art. He is interested in the role which in this process befalls the artist and the in-depth research of the relations occurring in the processes of the creation and reception of a work of art. Almost from the very beginning of his artistic activities, Bujnowski interferes with the public space. His major projects in this scope include: Galeria Otwarta [Open Gallery] which the artist run in Krakow in years 1998-2001, the painter’s intervention in the facade of Krakow’s Galeria Bunkier Sztuki performed in 2001 and the Okno [Window] billboard presented in the same year in the frames of Zewnętrzna Galeria AMS [The AMS Outdoor Gallery]. Also his Wiza [The Visa] project from 2004 may be included within his operations in the public space.

The project was based on a press release with the same title and was an attempt at reconstructing an incident in Warsaw city centre from two years ago. The Warsaw incident is a good-bye letter to a husband spelled out directly on the body of a station wagon.

On the basis of several images from the news, under cover of night, a professional dramatic artist will impersonate the role of the wife...
