WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE

Rist Pipilotti

(Nee Elisabeth Charlotte Rist), born in 1962 in Grabs, in Rheinthal (Switzerland) – one of the world’s most important contemporary video artists. She is a producer, director, and creator of video installations and videos. She studied advertising, illustration, and photography at the Institute of Applied Arts in Vienna (1982-86), audiovisual communications (video) at the School of Design in Basel (1986-88). She worked as a computer graphics specialist for various film-industry related studios (1987-94).

She was a member of a music and performance group Les Reines Prochenes (1988-94). Invited by Professor P. McCarthy, she lectured at the UCLA in Los Angeles (2002-2003). She lives and works in Zurich and in the mountains of Switzerland (since 2004). She has participated in several hundred of individual and collective exhibitions in the most prestigious cultural institutions and galleries worldwide. A laureate of, among others: Prize of the Feminale Cologne (1988), Manor-Prize, Sankt Gallen (1994), Scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service: DAAD (1995), Premio 2000 of the Biennale di Venezia (1997), Wolfgang-Hahn-Preis (1999), 01 award and Honorary Professorship of the Universität der Künste, Berlin and Joan Miró Prize (2009).

In her creative work, Pipilotti Rist employs techniques which stand in opposition to traditional film methods. She reaches to the visual potential of cultural phenomena (TV, design, fashion) and art (painting, sculpture, music). She uses quick editing and pop-style colour themes. She employs irony, quite often tinged with a sense of humour, but also sarcasm and understatements which build the sense of distance provoking the viewer to simultaneously “rebel and flirt” in the dialogue with her works. She engages problems pertaining to the creation of reality by the contemporary media as well as the issues related to identity, cultural sex, and sexuality.
