WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE

The BNNT

BNNT is one of the sound projects by Konrad Smoleński, co-created by Daniel Szwed.

Konrad Smoleński (born in 1977 in Kalisz) studied and graduated in photography (in 2002) from the Intermedia Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. After his graduation, he worked at the Academy as an assistant lecturer in the Pracownia Audiosfery and a lecturer in video arts. From 1999-2002 he participated in the actions of the Stado Prusa (the Prusa 2/9 gallery and the WahrStadt gallery).

He is a laureate of a couple of awards and scholarships, such as the scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and Art. He is a member of the PARTNERSTWO group (W. Bąkowski, P. Bosacki, T. Mróz, K. Smoleński, M. Starska, R. Szlaga, I. Tarasewicz). He has lived and worked in Warsaw since 2005.

The BNNT is another project by Smoleński based on the use of sound as a medium for art. Last year, with the release of the NGNP album in the Art Bazaar Records he completed a long-term project of audio-performances entitled Niuniuni gra na Psie.

He was a member of the KOT group, from the very beginning of its activity, together with Wojciech Bąkowski, Leszek Knaflewski, Tomasz Mróz and Piotr Bosacki. He also co-created such bands as Kristen, Sixa and Mama. Since 2003 he has developed the activity of a non-formal PinkPunk association for musical bands from the Polish alternative scene (its members include Plum, Woody Alien, Etamski, KOT, NP, Ed Wood).

His musical interests are present in other types or art Smoleński works with, including video, installations and performances, which are an expression of the creator’s indefatigable energy, his specific sense of humour, tendency to break conventions and customs and uncompromising approach to art.
BNNT Sound Bombing

Krakow was attacked by Konrad Smoleński’s group suddenly and intensively.

During the day, half-naked men in masks was driving around the city in an especially prepared trap-car, from which they emited loud sounds or gave spontaneous performances for casual audiences in locations selected by chance. The BNNT actions was not be prepared or agreed with the city authorities – they were to have the character of terrorist attacks conducted by sound graffiti artists who leave their traces only in the memory of their audience.

The artists did not leave Krakow alone at night, either. However, the strategy of night sound interventions was completely different. The audio-terrorists changed the soundtrack of the sleeping city in a subtle way by placing the emitters of their own sounds on the border of the audience’s perception. Apart from screaming cats on Krakow rooftops or on the ground, we experienced additional layers of the city soundtrack.

All there was to do was to be alerted to the attack of artists from Warsaw, Poznań and Wrocław, who are co-creating The BNNT Sound Bombing project for the ArtBoom Festival.

These artists include:

Konrad Smoleński – baritone missile
Daniel Szwed - percussion
Michał Kupicz - sound
Bartek Górka - documenting
Dagny Nowak – visual support
