Černý DavidOne of the most famous Czech artists on the international arena. He creates installations and sculptures, which are an important commentary on public spaces. Controversy, cutting retort and social criticism are also a part of his artistic concept. Some of his works are created almost outside the law. He is especially famous for his work commemorating the Czech presidency in the European Union Council entitled Entropa: Stereotypes are Barriers to be Demolished in 2009. Černý was to be the coordinator of an installation based on cooperation of artists from all member states. Entropa is a 3-metre jigsaw, the elements of which create the outline of the EU states – the idea was that every artist would have the outline of his/her country at their disposal and would fill it with symbols representing stereotypes of their state functioning in the eyes of other nations. Right before the work was to be exhibited in the hall of the European Commission’s building it turned out that the artistic cooperation is a mystification developed by Černý. The leaflet presenting individual national elements with names and biographies of creators had been fabricated and – what is more- many states were presented in an unfavourable light. A laureate of the prestigious Chalupecky’s Award. Many of his works are presented in the public space of Prague, in 2010 his sculpture Golem enriched the space of one of the streets in Poznan. He is the co-founder of the Prague MeetFactory International Museum of Contemporary Art. |
(R)evolution: Freedom![]() A work created as a tribute to Orange Alternative entitled Freedom. It refered to the essence of activity of the Polish happening movement – a perverse fight with a regime, based on absurd and clad in an artistic costume. Figures revolved on their own axis, reminded one of rams, were cut in the floor – just like actions for freedom undertaken by Pomarańczowa Alternatywa were blasting out the communist system. ![]() ![]() ![]() (R)evolution project curators: Katarzyna Jagodzińska, Natalia Żak (Międzynarodowe Centrum Kultury) and Marcin Gołębiewski (Fundacja Wschód Sztuki) The work was part of the (R)evolution project that accompanied the Happening against Communist by the Orange Alternative exhibition presented in the International Cultural Centre Gallery (Rynek Główny 25) from the 19th of June to the 2nd of October 2011.
