Marta Deskur, curator: Wojciech Szymański

Marta Deskur

Visual artist. In the years 1983-1988 Marta studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence. Since the early 1990s, she has been involved in producing multimedia works, combining her interest in photography and installation, as well as creating objects, videos and films. She has participated in many group exhibitions in Poland and abroad, and in solo exhibitions at Poland’s leading art galleries, such as the Starmach Gallery in Krakow, Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, or Kronika Gallery in Bytom. Often drawing subversive inspiration from religious iconography, her art is generally situated in the “critical art” context of key importance for the understanding of Polish modern art, post-1989.

Wojciech Szymański

Collaborated with various artists at previous ArtBoom Festivals in Krakow, including Florian Dombois (project Skeletor and Blue Building), Karol Radziszewski (project MS 101) and Łukasz Skąpski (project 10 Cubic Metres of Krakow Winter Air).
Nova Roma

The Nova Roma project, conceived by Marta Deskur and carried out in cooperation with the Roma Harangos Association, consists of a series of workshops run by the artist with Roma assistants and children from two Roma clubs in Nowa Huta. In a course of workshops, the artist worked with Roma children, developing a series of collages and photomontages based on contemporary photographs of Nowa Huta and compositions created by the children from pictures they selected and reused to create collages. In this way, visual works were created and signed with Roma-language captions. They have made a new map of the district which tells its story using words and pictures created during the workshops. Pictures and texts make up a joint, collective art book and there is an exhibition of works by the youngest Roma residents of the district in cooperation with the artist.
