6th Grolsch ArtBoom Festival programme
The programme of the 6th Grolsch ArtBoom Festival is already known! This year we will meet in Nowa Huta and talk about the youngest district of Krakow in the context of an ideal SocCity. Paulina Ołowska, Monica Bonvicini, Marta Deskur, Grzegorz Klaman, Sasha Kurmaz, the Łaźnia Nowa Theatre, Szymon Kobylarza and other artists will show their works in the urban space of Nowa Huta. The festival which will continue from 6th to 22nd June, is organised by the Krakow Festival Office.
- The Nowa Huta district bustles with life: it is bold and inspiring, so we are sure it will welcome our Festival and all its typical energy. We are glad that contemporary art will enter Nowa Huta and hope it will stay forever in the district, but first of all among its residents – says Izabela Helbin, Director of the Krakow Festival Office.
During this year’s Festival we will see The Face of the Day exhibition taking up the subject of social costs in Poland during the last 25th years during the process of transformation. Thanks to BarCamp NOWA HUTA we will become acquainted with movements, initiatives and organisations operating within the district and we will try to hypnotize the sun. We will have the opportunity to admire The Fountain of the Future on Centralny Square, be inspired by the slogan Praise the People of Nowa Huta painted with flower beds, we will learn that the way we walk defines our identity and listen to a lecture on post-industrial cities and their future. We will also meet Monica Bonvicini, giving an ArtistTalk about the complex relations between architecture and power and the social aspect of buildings. We will welcome the reconstructed neon sign Markiza and see the results of artists working together with Roma children from Nowa Huta youth clubs under a series of workshops.
- Since last year we have followed the trail of a complex organisation of Krakow’s urban space WE started from the plan of Greater Krakow, dealing with Podgórze, and now we focus on the ideal SocCity which Nowa Huta was once expected to be. The 6th Festival is devoted to Nowa Huta which has not been sufficiently present at the Artboom so far – says Małgorzata Gołębiewska, Artistic Director of the Grolsch ArtBoom Festival. We don’t want to limit ourselves to the geography aspect and administrative division of the city, we seek more universal issues which justify the presence of artists on this area. The common idea behind the projects is a widely understood issue of work. We will address the origins of the workers; city-district, ask about the district’s identity and about its past, encouraging to the creation of a futurologist vision of this area of the city.
The location of the year’s Grolsch ArtBoom Festival in Nowa Huta is aimed at encouraging cooperation with the district residents and active involvement of the local community. Many projects are based on cooperation with local activists, people of authority, as well as individuals and institutions experienced in artistic, cultural and social activities. Main events of the 6th Festival focus on Nowa Huta, not only as an administrative part of the city, but also on its history, urban planning, architecture and ethnographic aspects. The festival is based on four elements: the main exhibition, conceptual projects connected with the district’s history, memory and identity; grassroots community projects and the 5th Fresh Zone competition.
