Krakow ART Session 2011
Art Session is the idea of an original man. His name is just like his surname – Krzysztof Krzysztof, but that's not all, of course. When he erected a statue of Zarathustra in the middle of a street, the artist sparked a debate about artistic freedom within the urban space. The sculpture was put up purposefully, without any permits, illegally. The Krakow Board of Municipal Infrastructure and Transport had two options. It could either consider the act of placing the statue as illegal occupation of the road lane, or establish a dialogue with the artist to see what the reasons were behind his action.
Krakow Art Session is an event that brings together the activities of artists with audiences in the urban space of Nowa Huta. The event is aimed at promotion of young artists and encouragement of their development. Other objectives include: presenting the interests of the citizens of Krakow and Poland in the field of art and culture; improving the criteria for art in the public space; promoting new technologies developed by local businesses and research entities. The strength of the Krakow Art Session is that the event puts the greatest emphasis on artists' authenticity and their living culture. Art Session is held under the patronage of the Mayor of the City of Krakow, prof. Jacek Majchrowski.
Krakow, a city of history and art, has always been open to creators. However, it is also obliged before its citizens to care about the public space. This is the reason for having established the procedures that must be obeyed. As a result of a discussion with Krzysztof Krzysztof, city authorities resolved that it was possible to reconcile the desire of artistic expression with the law in place.
The City will give the public space for a month to young artists represented by Krzysztof Krzysztof. City's role will consist in assigning places where artists can create their works. The city will not interfere with the selection of artists or composition of the chapter for the open air event. Artists will not receive any awards but the opportunity to present Krakow's citizens with their art – and presenting themselves as artists and tutors, of course. For many, this type of art is controversial (which is reflected in the number of commentaries on Krzysztof's sculpture that, since March, has been on display at al. Róż), yet the artists have a chance to defend themselves through their works. Thus, the artistic form of the project was entrusted to Krzysztof, who had initiated the discussion on the place of contemporary art in Krakow, also emerging as an advocate of his generation.
The first edition of the ART Session will involve 15 artists from Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany. The artists will create their works around the Nowa Huta Cultural Centre – the heart of the open-air project until the end of August. In the course of the open-air project, local inhabitants will be encouraged to take an active part in the creative process. Complete works will be exhibited in Krakow's public space and in September Szczepański Square will host an exhibition documenting the open-air project.
