Damnation of Imagination in the Bunker
In the Gallery of Contemporary Art, Bunker of Art, you can now see an exhibition called Przekleństwa Wyobraźni [Curses of the Imagination], which was realized as part of the events accompanying the ArtBoom Tauron Festival.
The project is that of two curators: Karolina Bujnowicz and Magdalena Ujma and is an attempt at examining a phenomenon, which has been clearly visible in Polish painting over the last few years. It can by defined as a return to imagination and dreams, as well as an exploitation of autobiographical motifs, which uncover a space made up of the dreams, fears and obsessions of artists. This trend is characterized by a turn in the direction of the aesthetics of surrealism and abstraction. The theatrical and at the same time tasteful and elegant arrangement of the exhibition was planned as a reference to the aesthetics and worlds presented in the works on display. We will see the pieces of the classic Hans Bellmer and the young sculptor Kasia Fudakowski, Piotr Janas’ paintings, Dorota Jurczak’s drawings, Goshka Macuga’s sculptures, Edmund Monsiel’s visually meticulous works, and also, the paintings of two graduates of Krakow’s Academy of Fine Arts, Tomasz Kowalski and Jakub Julian Ziołkowski.
The exhibition constitutes an interesting summary of what has created much commotion in Polish painting over recent years. Przekleństwa Wyobraźni is open to visitors at Krakow’s Bunker of Art until 22 August.
